I want to learn how to knit effectively. I tried before, and even with the help of my lovely and talented knitting teacher, Kate of Spin Cycle fame, I wasn't able to make much headway on the baby blanket I picked for my friend Annaliese's new little boy.
So, I'm going to try a scarf and hat. I have some wonderful yarn (again, from Spin Cycle) that I will be using for the hat, and I may treat myself with some matching or coordinating yarn for the scarf.
I know there are many basic patterns out there for hats and scarves, but I'd rather support my lovely friends (who let me hold their puppies!) so I will be making This basic stocking cap and find a simple pattern for a scarf that coordinates.
Eventually, I want to get good enough to make THESE beautiful armwarmers that I've been coveting since I found the pattern over a year ago. I will have them, it will just take time and patience.
I can't stop thinking of crafting today.
I was going to dye my hair tonight but I think instead I'm going to sew.

I think a big reason you weren't able to make much headway is due largely to the fact that there were yarnovers in that baby blanket pattern. When you're first starting out, it's hard to differentiate between a yarnover you meant to make and one you didn't, and if you have to go back and fix something-- well, God help you is all I can say.
There are plenty of very pretty stitch patterns that only incorporate knit and purl, a lot of which can be translated to a scarf (scarves are, after all, just giant gauge swatches). In fact, I have an entire book full of them!
