So, the day before yesterday I went on a bit of a craft making speed trip. I told my beloved husband at the beginning of this week that with all I have left to do, it's not a good week for me to be doing things like, oh, yanno, going out to movies or dinner or spending time away from my craft room. Not only are we broke, but since I took the handmade pledge I really wanted to make most of our presents this year. Crafting things for people I care about is important to me, and I wanted to make the most of the time I had left.
So, my dear husband planned a movie night with the free movie tickets he got from his boss, invited my surrogate brother, Chase, (his best friend from High School and our unofficial roommate... he spends more time here than he does at home...) and their friend Nick. Then he whined and cajoled until I capitulated and agreed to go see "I Am Legend" with them on Tuesday night.
First off, let me tell you, dear readers, what a mistake that was for me. Not only was I thinking about all the things I could be making had I only opted to stay at home, but I am DEATHLY (bad pun intended) afraid of zombies or anything zombie like. Oh, you laugh now, but really, it's a real fear. I KNOW in my little scaredy heart of hearts that not only must they exist somewhere, but our lack of attention to their existence is only allowing them to evolve more quickly than they do in movies. Then, when the zombie invasion comes, there will be none of this "OH MY GOD, THEY'RE EVOLVING AND DEVELOPING THE CAPABILITY TO PROBLEM SOLVE" while the weak among the surviving humans have fallen to the less able of the zombie drones.
I digress.
"I Am Legend" was not really about zombies, per se. They couldn't come out in the sunlight, so they were more like vampires. But, they didn't have sharp teeth, they were just grey and made only shrieking noises like raptors and ripped things apart to eat. They were also super strong and super fast. They climbed walls. I know in the book they're actually vampires, but Hollywood decided the zombie angle was the tack they wanted to take. So after the movie ended, the boys and I made our way to Red Robin, which we never go to but we had a gift certificate (also from John's Boss) which was making this whole evening possible. In the garishly lit restaurant, with the boys making inappropriate jokes and talking about the field of viral research, I was able to put the image of zombie/vampires climbing a house to get at the people inside out of my mind. Unfortunately, that night, when it came time to sleep, the logic of "they're not REAL, really" wasn't enough for me to get my 40 winks in. It wasn't even that great of a flick, I'm just a very very big wuss.
So, I spent Tuesday night having the bejeezus scared out of me. I figured I'd need to double time to make up what I missed. I'd love to post pictures and tell you all about what I got done, but there is a chance that the people who will be receiving said gifts will look at this here blog, so I have to wait 'till after the gifts have been given.
I finished off two gifts on Wednesday, and made a stocking for my husband. It was a slap dash job, but he picked out the fabric last year and wanted something made from it, and I don't have the time to spend on making it to the standards I'd like, so I whipped him up a basic stocking and I have enough of the fabric left to make him one for next year that is a bit more embellished and turn this one into the stocking for the doggies.
I decided I'd spent too long alone in my sewing hidey hole, so I came out and baked.
I'll take some pics of the nifty cookies and post them tonight.
It is usually my day off but I've got to get to work soon, since I'm closing today for Katy, who is winging off to Ohio to see her family for Christmas. My ONLY day off before Christmas, and this is what I'm doing..... *sigh*
That's okay. She needed to go home and I am the only one who could possibly take this shift. If I didn't take it, she'd have to leave tomorrow and only get 3 days at home, which is really not worth flying across country.
Plus, I'm going to ask nicely for the kids to cover a day or so for me in January so I can take a trip out of town, maybe go on a weekend get away with John. We never got a honeymoon, and have never really taken a trip together. Ever. It would be really nice, even just to go to a bed and breakfast and spend the weekend just thinking about being us for a while, yanno? School starts again in just barely a week, and my 15 credits and working full time is going to put the kabosh on most of the couplely things we've been kicking around.
See you soon, peanuts.

The movie made me really want to read the book. Head's up! I am going to discuss the movie, so if someone is reading this that has not seen the movie yet, but wants to...don't read any further.
The movie has really stuck with me the last couple days. I think Will Smith did a amazing job in this role. When Sam died, I really felt like a family member had died and when Robert (Will Smith's character) runs into the warehouse after Sam you get caught up in the situation. I was mad at the dog, but I understood exactly why Robert couldn't leave Sam behind.
All in all, I loved the movie, which is nice, because it has been awhile since I really felt like a move made some sort of impact on me.
